Jiayin is a PhD Student interested in topics of medieval Japanese literature, memory studies, and material culture. Before joining the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Penn, she received her MA in East Asian Studies from the University of California-Los Angeles, and her BA in Asian Studies, International Studies, and Psychology from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Her research interests center around medieval Japanese war tales, focusing on the fourteenth-century war tale The Tale of the Heike (Heike monogatari). Jiayin is intrigued by the interplay between war tales, cultural memory, and trauma, as well as how texts and narratives bring about order by narrating disorders. Her secondary and tertiary interests include the reinterpretation and adaptation of the Heike across various media, as well as cultural practices related to mourning, memorialization, and commemoration from premodern to contemporary Japan.
