The Chinatown Game: Critical Play, Storytelling, and Humanities in Praxis

Eileen Cheng-yin Chow
- | 844 Williams Hall

My talk will explore the use of analog and digital games, play, and performance in the humanities, as well as the role of storytelling in the classroom. In particular, I will share my experience designing and running extended RPGs (role-playing games), and in particular, “The Miss L.A. Chinatown Missing!” game that I designed for and implemented in my Global Chinatowns class. The larger discussion will focus on issues of collaborative storytelling, ethics of role-playing cross-gender/race/ethnicity, facticity in reconstructing historical events, and the pragmatics of incorporating alternative pedagogical practices in the humanities.
