The School of Arts and Sciences offers a limited number of travel subventions to PhD Candidates each year. The travel funds are limited to one trip per fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) and cover up to a maximum of $500 in eligible travel expenses. To meet the requirements, a student must be:
- A full-time PhD Candidate
- In residence at the University
- Giving a paper, presenting a poster, or serving as a commentator at the meeting of a professional organization
Eligible students are encouraged to complete the Request for SAS Travel Subvention for PhD Candidates form and submit it to Administrative and Financial Services via email or in-person.
The Research Council of the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GAPSA) offers the Research Student Travel Grant once during each semester for students attending or presenting at the meeting or conference of a professional organization. The grant will cover up to a maximum of 50% of the total cost or $500, which ever is less, for students who are only attending the meeting or conference of a professional organization. The grant will cover up to $800 for students who are presenting at the meeting or conference of a professional organization. The grant reimburses the expenses a student has already incurred. A recommendation from an advisor or supervisor is required. To meet the requirements, a student must be:
- An MA Student
- A PhD Student/Candidate
- Attending the meeting or conference of a professional organization
- Presenting at the meeting or conference of a professional organization

SASGov offers the Small Grant once during each semester for travel to the meeting or conference of a professional organization OR for travel for research related purposes. The grant will cover up to a maximum of $500 of travel related expenses. To meet the requirements, a student must be:
- An MA Student
- A PhD Student/Candidate
- Attending the meeting or conference of a professional organization
- Presenting at the meeting or conference of a professional organization
- Traveling for research related purposes (i.e. to visit an archive, museum, or site)

Each year the Graduate Division of the School of Arts and Sciences solicits nominations from Graduate Group Chairs for qualified PhD Candidates to receive the Dissertation Research Award. The Dissertation Research Award is competitive so not all nominated Candidates will be chosen to receive funding.
The Dissertation Research Award is designed for PhD Candidates who are in the early-to-intermediate stage of dissertation research. Candidates are eligible to receive two DRAs during the course of their graduate career. The maximum award is $5000 and can be used for eligible expenses, including travel and research related expenses.
If nominated, the Candidates will receive information from the Graduate Chair and Graduate Coordinator with respect to their part in the application process and any required supporting documents they need to submit.
The Graduate Coordinator will send out information in advance of the next nomination period.
Each year the Graduate Division of the School of Arts and Sciences solicits nominations from Graduate Group Chairs for qualified PhD Candidates to receive a Dissertation Completion Fellowship. The Dissertation Completion Fellowship is competitive so not all nominated Candidates will be chosen to receive funding.
The Dissertation Completion Fellowship is designed for PhD Candidates who could reasonably finish their Dissertation during the year in which they hold the DCF. The DCF provides a standard academic-year stipend, general fee, tuition, and health insurance. PhD Candidates awarded a DCF who do not complete their Dissertation during the year in which they hold the DCF are usually ineligible to receive future fellowship aid from SAS.
If nominated, the Candidates will receive information from the Graduate Chair and Graduate Coordinator with respect to their part in the application process and any required supporting documents they need to submit.
The Graduate Coordinator will send out information in advance of the next nomination period.
The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) is available to graduate students training in modern foreign languages. The FLAS Fellowship is open for Academic Year and Summer application cycles. Each cycle requires a separate application.
Applicants must be:
- U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents of the U.S.
- Enrolled in full-time study
