EAST ASIAN LANGUAGES AND CIVILIZATIONS MINOR (EALC): 8/6 c.u.

Students interested in the EALC Minor are strongly encouraged to meet with the Minor Advisor to discuss their course plans.

Students minoring in East Asian Languages and Civilizations must select one of three concentrations:

  • Chinese Studies
  • Japanese Studies
  • Korean Studies

Each concentration comprises a Language Requirement (4 c.u.; see below for details) and a combination of gateway and thematic courses (Content Courses), to be taken in the concentration of choice, for a total of 8 c.u. These Content Courses must include one gateway course (EALC 0020, for Chinese minors; EALC 0040; for Japanese minors; or EALC 0060, for Korean minors) and three electives.

  • Electives must be selected for appropriateness with the student's Major Advisor.
  • Students may count up to two courses that are not cross-listed by EALC toward the minor electives.
  • Up to four courses outside the department (including study abroad) may be used toward the minor with the special approval of the student's advisor, but in no case may a student count more than half of the total minor requirements in non-EALC courses.
  • All classes must be taken for a grade; they cannot be taken pass/fail.

The four (4) c.u. language requirement is normally fulfilled by taking Intensive Beginning Chinese (CHIN 0210 and CHIN0 410, 4 c.u.) or four semesters of non-intensive Chinese (CHIN 0100, CHIN 0200, CHIN 0300, and CHIN 0400). For those who place out of CHIN 0410 or CHIN 0400 or CHIN 0420, established by placement exam or transfer credit, the language requirement is reduced to two (2) c.u. so that the total minor requirement for these students is reduced to six (6) c.u. The three electives must be non-language courses pertaining to China, Inner Asia, and/or East Asia, but may include Classical Chinese (EALC 3621, 3622, 3623, 3624). No other language courses are permissible without prior approval.

Please note: CHIN 0320 and CHIN 0420 are considered equivalent to CHIN 0300 and CHIN 0400 and therefore cannot fulfill the language portion of the minor without further language coursework.

The four (4) c.u. language requirement is normally fulfilled by taking Intensive Beginning Japanese (JPAN 0210 and JPAN 0410, 4 c.u.) or four semesters of non-intensive Japanese (JPAN 0100, JPAN 0200, JPAN 0300, and JPAN 0400). For those who place out of JPAN 0410 or JPAN 0400, established by placement exam or transfer credit, the language requirement is reduced to two (2) c.u. so that the total minor requirement for these students is reduced to six (6) c.u. The three electives should be non-language courses pertaining to Japan and/or East Asia.

Students must complete four (4) c.u. of Korean language, usually KORN 0100 and KORN 0200: Elementary Korean I & II and KORN 0300 and KORN 0400: Intermediate Korean I & II. For those students who place out of KORN 0400 or KORN 0420, established by placement test or transfer credit, the language requirement is reduced to two (2) c.u. taken at Penn, so that the total minor requirement for these students is reduced to six (6) c.u. The three electives should be non-language courses pertaining to Korea and/or East Asia.

EAST ASIAN AREA STUDIES MINOR (EAST): 6 c.u.

Students interested in the EAST Minor are strongly encouraged to meet with the Minor Advisor to discuss their course plans

This interdisciplinary minor is intended to offer undergraduates an experience which focuses on East Asia as a region of the world and of human experience, and provides an integrated curriculum drawing on the approaches of the social sciences, humanities, and legal studies.

Basic Requirements:

At least six (6) c.u. on East Asia. Courses to be counted toward the minor must be taken for a letter grade. Within these courses the following must be included:
